> macOS has strong built-in hands-free options: Voice Control for commanding everything by voice, Siri and Dictation, a head pointer and dwell clicking under Accessibility, and Switch Control. ClapSnap adds two more: a double clap or snap to open your apps, and Air Mouse for steering the cursor with hand gestures through the webcam.

Hands-free control on a Mac is better than most people realise, and most of it is already built in. Here are the options worth knowing, and what each one is best at.

## 1. Voice Control (built in)

The most complete hands-free system on macOS. Turn it on in **System Settings, Accessibility, Voice Control**, then say commands like "Open Safari", "Click Done" or "Scroll down". "Show numbers" labels everything clickable so you can say a number. Best for people who need to run the whole Mac by voice.

## 2. Siri

Quick for single requests: open an app, set a timer, run a shortcut by name. Less suited to detailed control, and it needs you to speak.

## 3. Dictation

Built-in speech-to-text for writing in any text field. Pair it with Voice Control for editing.

## 4. Head pointer (built in)

Under **Accessibility, Pointer Control**, macOS can move the pointer from your head movements seen by the camera. Combine it with dwell to click.

## 5. Dwell clicking

Dwell performs a click when you hold the pointer still for a moment. It turns any pointing method, including a head pointer, into a full mouse.

## 6. Switch Control

For people who use adaptive switches: macOS scans through items and you choose with a switch, a key or a sound. Very flexible, with more setup.

## 7. ClapSnap: clap to open your apps

[ClapSnap](/) opens your whole set of workspace apps on a double clap or snap, detected on-device. One gesture replaces a run of clicks or commands. See [how to set it up](/blog/clap-to-open-apps-mac).

## 8. ClapSnap Air Mouse: hand-gesture cursor

[Air Mouse](/air-mouse) tracks your hand through the webcam: point to move, pinch to click or drag, three fingers or your pinky to scroll. Useful when a mouse is uncomfortable or you are away from the desk.

## Which to choose

| Need | Start with |
| --- | --- |
| Run the whole Mac without hands | Voice Control |
| Write without typing | Dictation |
| Point without a mouse | Head pointer with dwell, or Air Mouse |
| Open your apps in one go | ClapSnap |
| Use adaptive switches | Switch Control |

They combine well: Voice Control for detail, a clap to start the day. More on why in [hands-free Mac automation](/blog/hands-free-mac-automation-accessibility).

**Try ClapSnap.** Double clap or snap to open your whole Mac workspace, and steer the cursor with your hand. Pay what you want, minimum €8, one-time purchase, with a 14-day refund. [Get ClapSnap](https://clapsnap.viberank.co.in/#download)
