To make your Mac open apps when you clap, install ClapSnap, allow microphone access, add the apps you want, and choose double clap or double snap as the trigger. ClapSnap listens on-device in the menu bar and opens every app in your list when it hears the gesture.
Clapping to open your apps sounds like a gimmick until you try it at 9 in the morning with a coffee in one hand. Here is how to set it up properly.
What you need
- A Mac on macOS 13 Ventura or later, Apple Silicon or Intel.
- Any working microphone: the built-in one is fine.
- ClapSnap, a menu bar app, pay what you want from €8 with a 14-day refund.
Clap or snap?
| Double clap | Double snap | |
|---|---|---|
| Loudness | Loud and deliberate | Quiet and quick |
| Best for | Home offices, studios | Open-plan offices, shared rooms |
| Works from across the room | Yes | Closer is better |
You can switch between them at any time in Settings.
Picking a sensitivity
- High for a quiet room and a good microphone.
- Medium for most rooms. Start here.
- Low for noisy spaces where you get false triggers.
If it misses or misfires
- Nothing happens: check System Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone, and make sure ClapSnap is allowed. Then try a sharper clap or a higher sensitivity.
- It opens apps by itself: lower the sensitivity, or switch from clap to snap if the room has sharp noises.
- macOS blocked the app on first launch: in System Settings, Privacy and Security, click Open Anyway next to the ClapSnap line.
What to put in your list
Choose the apps you open every working session, not every app you own. The workspace setups by role suggest lists for developers, designers, writers, students and more. Once your apps are open, Air Mouse lets you steer the cursor with your hand.
Set up clap to open apps
- Install ClapSnap. Download ClapSnap, drag it into Applications and open it. The first launch needs one approval in System Settings, Privacy and Security, because it is distributed outside the Mac App Store.
- Allow the microphone. When macOS asks, allow microphone access. ClapSnap analyses audio in memory and keeps none of it.
- Add your apps. Open Settings from the menu bar icon and add every app you want to open together.
- Choose clap or snap. Pick double clap for a home office or double snap for a quieter shared room.
- Set sensitivity and test. Start on Medium. Clap twice, firmly, and watch your apps open behind the welcome overlay.
- Turn on launch at login. So ClapSnap is listening every time you sit down.
Questions
Does clap detection drain the battery?
ClapSnap listens with AVFoundation on your Mac, without a cloud service or machine-learning model, and is built to sit in the menu bar all day.
Will music or a video set it off?
It listens for a deliberate double clap or snap. If a loud room causes false triggers, lower the sensitivity to Low or switch to the other gesture.
Does it work with an external microphone?
Yes. Any built-in or external microphone macOS can use will work.
